Make it sew, Number One.

This is literally the very last one of each of these items. I cleaned out the Walmart sewing department with this purchase. This, after standing in line for half an hour to get in the store at opening time, so some fat ass could come and cut the line right up at the door. and yes, line from front to back of the supercenter to get toilet paper being handed out by a Walmart employee. It seems like we have a new wave of people taking this virus thing seriously.

That reminds me. We had a local shout out for anyone with spare bed sheets that could be donated.  They were making cloth bags for the healthcare workers so that they can pull off their potentially contaminated scrubs and shove them in a bag to be washed.

Love it when folks do that. Like you want to yell “what do you think the rest of us are standing here, for?”

A few weeks ago, went to Safeway before opening to stand in line to buy toilet paper. Guy opens the door and asks us to let the elderly folks in first, which was entirely reasonable.  While he’s doing that some woman just busts past him and goes inside.  Couldn’t believe it...

I was talking to a nurse friend of mine about that very thing yesterday. she was saying that she was changing her clothes in a bathroom before she came out and I said I thought she ought to just walk out and change her clothes in a parking lot. I told her I didn't think anybody would look at scans or treat her with any disrespect if she's a health care worker doing a quick clothing change out behind her minivan.

I think the most important thing we can do is not be that person.

This made me laugh a little, but it’s also a reminder of the innate sexist hobbies folks push on children:

There is no point in my life where I can remember having to buy anything sewing related that isn’t just restocking. I’ve just always had a sewing basket and I’ve had my grandmas old sewing machine for forever. I don’t even particularly like sewing.

If I wanted to fix something on my car right now ? I’d be pushing the equivalent shopping c art full of tools and supplies.

I like being a seamster among my other skills.

My dad was the one who operated the sewing machine in our family, until my sister learned how. I do all the sewing in my house. I bought a machine a bit ago and asked my sister for tips on using it effectively. I am my daughter learned to use it together. Being able to sew things is something everyone needs .

Funny thing is, even though my wife is the physician and has stitched together countless people, she doesn’t sew fabric . She queues all that up for me. I have removed stitches for her though.

Another funny thing: my daughter’s eighth grade class was offered Home Ec as an elective  this year. None of the girls took it. All of the boys did, and they really enjoyed it. In my mind, it’s like the Capitol One vandals learning to knit.

That’s awesome on the home ec thing. I just wish my dad had the patience or desire to teach me car stuff when I was a kid.

My dad wanted us to learn how to do all the things he did, but he always got impatient while doing them. It made it really hard to enjoy doing projects with him. As kids, we all dreaded the conscription. As adults, we ended up coming back to all those things on our own as a way to bond with him and also in recognition that it’s important to know these things.

He still gets impatient sometimes, but as adults we laugh it off and tell him to chill. It works...mostly. He loves working with his adult children.
